St. James the Greater – Son of Thunder

By Timothy P. Schmalz
Project Description

St. James is depicted in swift movement taking great strides as he walks with his staff along the banks of Spain with tremendous momentum. He is charged with the spirit and preaching as he walks emphasizing every word with a dramatic gesture, calling on those who hear him to follow Christ’s teaching. His head is directed downward, symbolic of his humility and disregard to any obstacles in his path. The shells at his feet represent him as the patron of pilgrims such as those who travel to Compostella on the shores of Spain today. These shells are also symbolic of his devotion to Christ when he left everything to become a “fisher of men”.
