This sculpture of the Crucifixion is the tallest of all in the series. Timothy employed the ancient method of a shift in scale within the sculpture itself to draw attention to the Corpus. The smaller scale scene below is filled with imagery. Mary is curled up in sorrow at the base of the cross while both John and Mary Magdalene are expressing their grief through physical contact with the cross. A single Roman guard stands off to right admiring his accomplishment of erecting the heavy cross. Two other Roman guards play a game of dice on the ground while admonished by a third staring in disgust. Even the other two crosses are evident in the distance followed by a deep perspective landscape of rolling hills. This baroque flurry of activity and emotion below gives great contrast and focus to the enlarged lifeless crucified Christ.
